Zuma Coffee, Marshall, NC
7 N Main St, Marshall, NC 28753
Who doesn't enjoy unexpectantly happening upon small towns? You know the kind. The kind with a lively historic downtown filled with shops and cafes that have been passed down from generation to generation. The kind that still has a General Store.
On our way back from Gatlinburg, TN to Asheville, NC we passed by small sign with an arrow pointing toward Marshall, NC. We didn't really have an intent to stop in Marshall, but we needed somewhere to eat our picnic lunch and thought it might have a park for us to sit in. Well... we not only found a park on the river, but so much more!
Zuma Coffee is THE place to be in Marshall, NC.
It's not often that small town coffee shops gain state-wide notoriey; however, Zuma Coffee most certainly has. Let me tell you why.
First, let's talk coffee. Zuma roasts Counter Culture Coffee (see the Quotations Coffee post for the rundown on Counter Culture). Zuma values sustainability and therefore, they like to brew coffee from a company that values sustainability as well. Makes sense.
The coffee 'specials' in the late Summer/early Fall were a home-made Cold Brew from the 20th Anniversary Counter Culture Coffee blend and an affogato. I ordered the FIRST affogato of my life (reference photo above: coffee & ice cream) and put it down in less than three minutes. It was THAT good.
There's no flashy decor here. No ultra trendy seating. Why? Because Zuma needs a practical setting to host its famous
Thursday Night Bluegrass Jam Sessions!
Every Thursday night beginning at 7 PM, Zuma pulls talent from all over North Carolina to a Bluegrass & Folk concert of sorts. This somewhat informal jam session is normally hosted by North Carolina’s Grammy-winning fiddling legend and local resident, Bobby Hicks. Aspiring musicians and local artists are encouraged to join in and showcase their talent in this intimate coffee shop setting.
Zuma has a menu offering general cafe items such as soups and salads, or what they might classify as soul food. Come early for dinner and stay late for dancing. Alternatively, do what we did and explore the cute downtown area and catch your morning or afternoon coffee fix along the way!
