Howdy y'all!

I'm Melanie and a traveling coffee blogger based in the South. This space is about more than coffee though - it's about the people who serve it, the spaces you drink it and the convos that bloom around it. Won't you join me?

Minimalism and coffee at its finest.

Black Tap has earned its name in Charleston. My husband was in town and we'd been doing nothing but house renovations for about a week. When the weekend hit, we'd decided to take the day off and wander off to Charleston in the search of an antique golden mirror and a new coffee shop.

What did we find? Lots of overpriced mirrors and a lively coffee shop in the form of Black Tap Coffee.

Black Tap Coffee is a hidden gem just a little over a mile away from the big shopping. I consider this a huge pro. You can avoid the craze of shopping-crazed tourists.

First thing I noticed:

It's busy.

Instead -- you get a feel for the what locals love in Charleston. There were lots of friend dates going on, students buzzing away on laptops and a couple small business owners sneaking away for their morning cold brew.

The design of the store is very simple. White walls, gorgeous wooden communal tables and a simple side bar. Lots of windows and gushing natural light.

As for us, we plopped down on a table at the front of the store in front of one of the giant front windows. I couldn't resist the opportunity for a perfect latte, Andrew opted for a cold brew and we both felt the need for a chocolate croissant.

Black Tap Coffee roasts their own beans on James Island. They are proud to roast on a Loring Falcon Smart Roaster; with it, they're able to keep consistency in their batches. If you love their coffee as much as I did, this is a very good thing.

If your curious, the origins of the Black Tap name comes from an old cask ale tap.

The place is literally booming. I watched lines build-up and wind down. Build up and wind down. There are a number of devoted customers who swear by this place. Don't get me wrong, there's also enough visitors, like myself, who couldn't resist a visit.

I had to ask; are they going to expand to a second shop? They certainly have enough customers. From the sounds of it, they're considering it. Believe me, this is a very good thing.
